E-Corps summer crews celebrate Graduation with a service project and fishing at Bastrop State Park.

E-Corps members at Mission San Juan in San Antonio.

Congratulations to our Environmental Corps Summer Youth Crew who have worked through two and a half months of hot weather during their summer break from our Charter High School.  They constructed an awesome rock masonry structure at Barton Hills Elementary, reopened  a 300 year old Spanish Irrigation channel in San Antonio, along with many other erosion control, invasive species, and trail projects.  Many members of the crew experienced their first time camping, fishing and even using a drill during their summer with E-Corps.  They learned to set up a tent, cook outside and cast a fishing pole.  The members also received High School credits for being on the crew and participating in several educational sessions throughout their term.  They raced in teams to identify the native and invasive tree species of Austin and learned how many of the plants around us are used in everyday materials.  They learned about the carrying capacity of an ecosystem and how to identify soil types by adding water to it. The members impressed us with their enthusiasm, work ethic, and mastery of skill and we know they will continue these values throughout their lives. Happy Graduation!

American YouthWorks recently received a $10,000 grant from REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.), a national outdoor retail co-op committed to connecting people with nature, to support American YouthWorks’ Environmental Corps and Service Learning Academy.

A reception honoring American YouthWorks and the other five grant recipients took place on  Sunday, August 1, 2010 at the LCRA Redbud Center at 3601 Lake Austin Blvd. Fellow grant recipients including Colorado River Foundation, Texas Bicycle Coalition, Hill Country Conservancy, Austin Parks Foundation, and Austin Ridge Riders each presented their plans for the various ways they will use the grant money from REI to make outdoor activities welcoming and accessible to all people and promote stewardship of the outdoors.

AYW E-Corps members and staff were on hand to accept the award.

American YouthWorks’ funds from REI will be used to provide program participants with proper safety equipment and educational materials, such as work boots and GPS systems, to help teach students critical skills for future jobs in the emerging green economy while simultaneously helping them to serve their communities and work toward an education.

“With great community partners like REI providing support to American YouthWorks, together we are able to train urban youth for careers in conservation and expose them to the great outdoors while also improving our parks’ infrastructure and habitat and in Austin, Travis County and across the State of Texas,” said Parc Smith, CEO of American YouthWorks.

American YouthWorks’ Service Learning Academy provides an opportunity for disadvantaged youth in the Austin area to combine their high school education with real life experience through service and green job training in environmental conservation. The Environmental Corps program focuses on four objectives including trail building, habitat restoration, public land improvement, and community service.

REI is committed to promoting environmental stewardship and increasing access to outdoor recreation through education, volunteerism, gear donations and financial contributions. The grant is the result of a nomination made by the Austin REI store.

“Being Green” just got a little easier with The Green Living Expo at the Austin Convention Center!

American YouthWorks Corps members set up booth at the Convention Center to present their skills and efforts, discover new green information, and fundraise on the weekend of April 23-25 at Austin’s Green Living Expo.

The Green Living Expo was an excellent opportunity for the various corps organization members (Casa Verde Builders, Computer Corps, Environmental Corps, and Green Energy Corps) to work together and learn more about each other as well. Generally,  Corps headquarters and activities do not afford additional time toward getting to know in-depth the objectives of fellow Corps programs.

This was also an opportunity to share the passion harbored from work done in the community from weatherization and home construction, park/trail/forestry and habitat restoration, refurbishing computer and technology donations, and generally working to assist and strengthen low-income and at-risk communities in the Austin area.

The booth was decorated by each Corps with ther respective individal flair.

GEC and ECorps constructed display boards using materials commonly worked with (natural woods or weatherization materials such as solar screens). E-Corps also had a table to display and demonstrate some of their commonly used tools. Computer Corps set up a powerpoint presentation with videos, photographs and information about all of the Corps programs and GEC guided booth visitors in online carbon footprint calculations.

To view the additional Green Living Expo snapshots, please visit our Facebook photo album of this event.

At the Convention Center, members also had the opportunity to explore what the Green Living Expo had to offer in more sustainable solutions for the way we live, food, entertainment, and build. There were hundreds of booths for sampling fresh organic cuisine and learning better ways to cook, book recycling programs through Austin Public Libraries, presentations and book signings from notable guest speakers in sustainability and green business, and various design ideas for work Corps members are utilizing (Rain water collectors, and innovative insulation and home construction designs).

Seminars were on three stages: Green Building, Sustainable Living, and Climate Change. Interim CEO Dick Pierce of Dick Pierce Designs presented on the Sustainability stage as an expert in Permaculture on Sunday, April 25th at 3pm.

In addition, GEC member Jake Clarke created an amazing magnet design that was offered to donors of $10 or more. This new American YouthWorks magnet has school location and contact information which an image depicting volunteers of all 4 Corps and Service Learning Academy programs working together. A number of these were handed out during the Green Expo weekend, but we still have a supply available for anyone interested in purchasing one now. The actual magnet size is 6.5” by 5”. Great for a refrigerator or filing cabinet, the magnet image actually pops out so you can use the border as a picture frame and have two magnets in one. For more information on donating and/or getting your magnet for a minimum donation of $10, please contact Brandon Kiger (bkiger@americanyouthworks.org). Quantities are limited so pick yours up today!

Parc Smith, E Corps Program Director, alongside John Hibbitts, Workforce Volunteer of the Year Award Recipient

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUSTIN, TX – October 15, 2009 – Today, Workforce Solutions Capital Area Workforce Board awardswill award the 2009 Volunteer of the Year Award to John Hibbitts, a 77 year old stone mason and long time AmeriCorps volunteer with American YouthWorks’ Environmental Corps. Hibbitts has a colorful background that began at age 7 as a stone mason in Scotland. He has since come full circle and currently dedicates his time to sharing his expert skills with young men and women in the job training program at American YouthWorks.

With a military history that began with the Special Air Service of the British Armed Forces, he eventually naturalized to the United States and became a member of the US Special Forces, serving with distinction in Vietnam with the Green Berets. Upon completion of his tour of duty, he returned to honing his stone masonry skills in a wide array of specialized projects such as creating the soaring stone arch structures for the National Cathedral in Washington, DC and revitalizing historic buildings and cathedrals in Guatemala that were devastated by the earthquake of 1976.

When Hibbitts came to American YouthWorks in 2006, he passed on the masonry and blacksmithing skills he had acquired and honed over a lifetime to the young people in the AmeriCorps program who were already doing basic masonry projects in their work with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Over the next three years, Hibbitts immersed himself in a wide variety of projects, connecting with the young members of the AmeriCorps program through their shared interest in using their hands and intellects to create something beautiful, useful, and durable.

The incredible efforts of John Hibbitts have impacted American YouthWorks’ workforce development program as a whole. The Environmental Corps now has a full blown masonry and blacksmith apprenticeship programs and places members into coveted internships with agencies such as National Park Service and Texas Parks and Wildlife. His contributions to the program have also resulted in funding commitments from these agencies to continue to develop the masonry apprenticeship program and to continue to produce high quality masons for restoration work in our nation’s parks and public spaces.

Since 2006, Mr. Hibbitts has given more than 3,000 hours of his time and heart to working with young people at American YouthWorks and engendering their love of creation, sense of their own historic place in time, and general harmony with their social and natural environment.
